POOR WHITE TRASH started
when Tony Urban read an article in a small-town newspaper about
a mother who robbed homes with her own son. In his twisted mind,
that seemed like the perfect idea for a comedy and the writing
began. Shortly afterwards Urban hooked up with LA-based writer/director
Michael Addis via the internet and the duo began penning the
script entirely through email. Hundreds of letters later the
script was finished and eventually sold to Kingsize Entertainment
where producers Lorena David and Mark Roberts brought their
wacky screenplay to life.
With a cast including sex
symbols Jaime Pressly and Sean Young, the movie was filmed in
Southern Illinois and opened to rave reviews. Reel.com named
it one of the "Top 10 buried treasures of 2001", calling
it "brilliant stupidity" (that is
a compliment) and comparing it to RAISING ARIZONA. They noted:
"Every member of
the ensemble cast (including Jamie Pressly, M. Emmet Walsh,
and William Devane as a sadistic, foul-mouthed lawyer) hits
just the right eccentric note, and the script is a veritable
quirk-fest. All this and sex, guns, fire, a trailer chase, and
an exploding Vega, too!"
Other reviews commented:
"The entire film
is hilarious and each and every time I see it ( and I have seen
it over and over) I find yet another bit of hilariously hidden
gems."
"A highly amusing
comedy with heart."
"Poor White Trash
is a hilarious film!"
In the tradition of the
Coen brother's early work, POOR WHITE TRASH is a manic, offbeat
comedy featuring gunfights, swimming pools, beef jerky, fast
food robberies, mobile home chases, and lots and lots of beer
cans.
