Everyone I know who has seen Christina's House hates it. Every review of Christina's House I've read has trashed it. So what does it say about me that I enjoyed this flick quite a bit, have watched it three times, and own the DVD? Does that mean I like crap or that the movie isn't nearly as awful as most would have you believe? Probably a little of both. The Tarling family has recently moved into an old, decrepit house where odd things seem to happen frequently. Whether it's girl scouts getting their neck's snapped, dead kids in the pond or something as simple as hearing noises in the attic, this clearly isn't home sweet home. Who's doing the dastardly deeds? Well, one of the flicks flaws(and critics' bigger beefs)is that it offers up more red herrings than the Atlantic and Pacific put together. Is it the father who seems to "love" his daughter a little more than normal? Is it the handyman(played by Brad Rowe giving his best Brad Pitt impression)? What about the asshole boyfriend? And what's up with the creepy cop who might not be a cop? Oh, and mom's in a nuthouse so you know that ain't good. Okay, so maybe there are a few too many suspects but is that really a fatal flaw? Hell no! Christina's House is a fun flick with lots of twists, a booby trapped house that's right out of a Wes Craven movie, some really inventive kills and some really fine acting. Sure, the guy playing dad chews the scenery like it's bubble gum, but at least you know he's there. Too many actors sleepwalk through horror flicks and that can't be said of anyone in this cast. The ending is downright brutal and earns the movie it's R rating. There's lots of red stuff flowing and gore-hounds will be pleased. As for flesh fiends, well, let me just say that we get 90+ minutes of Allison Lange in tank tops; Allison Lange in bras; Allison Lange in pajamas and Allison Lange in the bathtub(where she reveals her downright perfect breasts). The girl is a stunner and can also be seen in genre efforts like The Crawlspace(also known as Gacy) and The Hillside Stranglers. She's a superb, young actress and I hope she keeps making more horror movies. Don't believe all the negative tripe you've read about Christina's House. Just take it for what it is, a B horror movie that offers up boobs, blood and some cool kills. |
