Detour is The Hills Have Eyes for the new millenium. But don't let that turn you off (not that it would anyway, Hills is a classic), this movie is far, far away from your usual direct to video flick. Seeing a movie like this is almost sad. It has quality all over it, and yet they market it like a Wrong Turn rip off. And Wrong Turn isn't half the movie this is. Great acting, great production value, great effects, and some of the best cinematography in a picture at what I am guessing was a very low budget shoot. Sure, the story is basic: Group of kids leaving a rave in search of weed get broken down in the middle of a desert only to be attacked by a group of mutant desert-dwelling cannibals. Like I said, Hills Have Eyes again, but I could almost compare it to Jeremy Wallace's backwoods movie, The Undertow, in that it doesn't piss all over the original material, or make little side jokes about that genre of movie. It pays respect and homage to an almost dead genre of films, we are never going to experience again, unless another group of obvious horror fans, with talent, make an independently produced horror movie, and do it right. Also, let me add this. This a very violent movie. Gory and bloody, just like it should have been. We get nice implalings, and many cut off body parts. Also, let me add, on the DVD, if you watch the extended opening scene, we get to see my favorite, GUT MUCHING! I highly advise watching it. It is a truly beautiful thing. The DVD is great. We get a nice running commentary with the Director and Producers. Its a really fun commentary, complete with drinking and lots of talk about titties and ass. Great indeed. There is also a decent behind the scenes documentary, but it didn't really show any of the gore effects. Being a gore monger, I only wish more DVD's would give some insight into the making of the special effects. But a good documentary indeed. Some trailers, The Worst 24 Seconds in Film History, and the already mentioned Extended opening scene round off a great dvd. I really can't reccomend enough that you BUY this movie right away. It's great filmmaking all the way, and honestly, probably a better movie than The Hills Have Eyes. But you decide. Lizzard |
