While The Evil Dead is quite simply one of the greatest horror films ever made, it's sequel throws away the scares and goes straight for the laughs. Does it work? You bet your ass it does! Sam Raimi showed his love of dark, morbid humor in his earlier film and here he shows that he can make comedy every bit as funny as he can make horror scary. I have to admit, I greatly prefer ED1 for its atmosphere, realistic gore and fun characters. The sequel (if it can even be called that) is a basically a comedic remake of the first film. It has a similar set-up(Ash and a friend rent a cabin, she becomes posessed and he must fight demons)but this film introduces some extra characters, the professor's daughter and her snooty boyfriend, a hick and his hick girlfriend and even Evil Ash. These people are charicatures, but they're meant to be. All the actors do fine jobs but, aside from Campbell, my favorite was Kassie DePaiva(aka Kassie Wesley)who really shines as Bobbie Jo. Evil Dead 2 starts off fast and never slows down for it's entire running time. We have Ash fighting demons, Ash fighting civilians, Ash fighting himself, Ash fighting his hand. Ash is the super-hero in this film and Bruce Campbell is the perfect actor for the role. The things he does here, the lines he spouts (Groovy), the gore he endures, this is a legend in the making and everyone has to see this movie several times to appreciate it. Evil Dead 2 is definitely not for everyone. If you're looking for a horror movie you'll probably be disappointed. But if you want to laugh your ass off and see Bruce Campbell give the funniest performance of his career, then you are in for a treat. ED2 paves the way for the third entry in the franchise, Army of Darkness. Look for cameos from director Raimi at the end. |
