Jeremy Wallace did one slasher flick before he tackled directing duties on this slasher. The difference is that Jeremy's first, The Christmas Season Massacre, was meant to be funny and gory. With the Undertow, Jeremy looses the funny, and makes one brutal backwoods horror film. The story centers around a group of kids going to a small town for some fun.
Some swimming and rafting down a river. nothing but harmless fun. But they didn't take the local law enforcement's warning of getting out of town serious enough. That's when the mayor is alerted that there are some non-locals in town, and he sends his deformed inbred son after them. What really makes the Undertow click is that nothing much happens into about
half of the film except good character development. Jason Christ steals the show as an asshole, but he seems real. Emily Haack is the same. Julie Farrar... ugh... I won't go into why I really respect the girl's acting chops after this.

I won't say much more except this flick is what Wrong Turn wants to be. A trip back to the 1970's when Deliverance hit the screen. There are some nasty gore moments, and they rock, but the key to this is that everyone obviously wanted to make a damn fine horror movie. Eric Stanze's cinematography shows off some beautiful river footage , but it's weird to
see that and watch people's stomach ripped open.
I all got to say is get this movie. This is what indie horror filmmaking is all about.

DVD: Rocks. The picture is awesome. The greens are green and blood is damn red. There is a great behind the scenes showing off some great action. There is also a cool trailer vault with some classics like Savage Harvest (can't wait for the sequel!) and the upcoming film from Eric Stanze, China White Serpentine. Great. Another fine job from the guys at Sub Rosa.
